For the first time ever, a woman is shortlisted for Fifa’s Goal of the Year
…and what a goal it is, too, scored for Irish side Peamount United in October last year.
(Yes, we know it won’t play within this page… that’s Fifa for you).
Best of all, we expected an outpouring of misogyny on Twitter and YouTube, but the comments are almost all really positive. Well done, world.
Stephanie Roche’s goal is by far the best goal of the year. Hands down!

Stephanie Roche’s goal was absolutely sensational! Glad to see it reach the top 3.

Stephanie Roche deserves goal of the year.. If Messi or Runny did it it would have stopped time and made front page of papers

I would love to see #StephanieRoche win the Goal of the Year award, fantastic to watch.

Stephanie Roche’s goal is pure technical brilliance and instinct, a work of art. Seen few better.

However un-PC this is, no way is Stephanie Roche’s goal in the top three goals scored by anyone anywhere this year. The world’s gone mad

Well, we did say almost all.
