Xiaomi sells 2 million phones in 12 hours – and gets a Guinness World Record

We predicted something special would be happening for Chinese smartphone superbrand Xiaomi‘s 5th birthday, and they didn’t disappoint. Their Mi Fan Festival (‘Mi’ being the brand’s nickname) event last year sold over a million units, but they’ve outdone themselves this time.

After slashing prices on a range of popular devices, Xiaomi’s sales figures for the 12-hour extravaganza came in at:

The phones figure is key, because that’s what got them into the record books. 2.11 million phones sold created a new category of record, namely:

If you noticed a slight discrepancy there, you’re not alone: the festival lasted for 12 hours but the record says 24. That opens Xiaomi up to potential competition for the record, because another superbrand could do the same thing for twice as long and presumably sell more phones. Or, as I suspect the plan is, Xiaomi will just do the next sale for 24 hours and break their own record.

In any case, it’s a phenomenal achievement – that 2.08 billion Yuan of revenue equates to £292,031,991.36. More than 500,000 orders were shipped within the 12-hour festival, with 1800 service centres answering over a million phone calls. Crikey.

When you coming to the UK, Xiaomi?
