Bodum Bistro electric coffee grinder
Unless your machine makes coffee from the bean, you’ll usually need to buy a grinder. And if you don’t want to give yourself RSI, an electric model is probably your best choice. This is a burr coffee gringer, which coffee experts prefer over a blade grinder as they actually grind the beans rather than just cutting them into small pieces. This one is adjustable so you can grind beans to the right size for filter, espresso, or cafetière, and it has a pre-set timer so you can grind exactly the right amount, plus a friction clutch to help the grinding gear last longer.
It’s £79.99 from Amazon.
Scanomat TopBrewer
One for the opulent yet minimalist crowd, or any interior designers among you. The TopBrewer literally gives you hot coffee on tap (inside there is the smallest milk foamer in the world, designed to foam to the perfect temperature). It can be built into your worktop or table and is unobtrusive enough to match any design aesthetic. Even better, it has an app (iOS and Android) so it can be controlled by your phone or tablet, meaning you can make the perfect brew without having to get up from the sofa (except to pick it up and drink it… it’s a hard life). You can even control more than one machine with the same app – I’m thinking kitchen and bedroom…?

Impress coffee brewer
Of course, sometimes the best things are the simplest. The Impress is like a cafetière, but better. Instead of the mesh that normal french presses have, it comes with a metal filter and double silicone gasket. The holes in the filter have been designed to be slightly smaller than the lipid drops found in coffee, making sure no coffee grounds sneak into your drink and make it bitter. It couldn’t be easier to use: add freshly ground coffee to the outer cup, pour in water, leave for 3 minutes, and then press down the inner cup. Not only does it work as a coffee maker but because it’s insulated and durable it can be used as a travel mug, too.
It’s £32.99 from The Fowndry.
